CAPTURING NEW WORLD RECORDS AND BUILDING COMMUNITY WITH CHAZBOOK

A Majec Systems client expressed the need for a website built on user submissions of activities for consideration of being new records much like the Guinness Book of Records. Submittals judged as new records by the client would receive acknowledgement from Chaz as the winner in that particular area of achievement. The site included two Movable Type-based blogs to share new contest conditions and general news and information with the site visitors.

ChazbookThe technical requirements were that this web application could be deployed on Linux or Windows-based servers. The underlying technologies included the open source LAMP stack-Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP.

The Majec team designed the site to accept uploads of images and videos of the submitted activity. The application determined image type, size, orientation, and attempted to resize the image where necessary. The data was stored in a MySQL database and presented many categories of record attempts ordered by date, type and rank. The blogs were also integrated with the MySQL database.

For ease of use, the site saved user profile information to remember returning visitors and secured the information with a DES encryption algorithm.

The project was developed and executed over 4 months by the Majec Systems team on a hosting provider that provided the LAMP stack. Cowan Site Services was the web development partner on the project.
